Orb: a voice assistant for PC
A voice assistant for PC is useful when the next task is easier to say than type. Orb lets you ask about your schedule, draft an email or capture a note on your Windows 10 or 11 computer. It can speak its response while you continue working, with text available when talking aloud is inconvenient.
Choose when Orb listens
You can say hey Orb for hands-free interaction, hold a key to talk, or type instead. Voice needs your Deepgram key to turn speech into text. That service includes free credit; usage beyond it can cost money. Claude guides the setup so you do not need to assemble the voice tools yourself.
For speaking, Orb can use the Deepgram voice or an optional ElevenLabs voice at $22/month. The ElevenLabs option is separate from the software purchase. A mute button stops speech without stopping the other work, and Orb can go quiet during meetings or when you are away. Choose the listening mode that suits the space around your desk.
Make the spoken request specific
Try a request such as: put a call with Sam on Thursday at two for an hour, and remind me that morning. Orb uses your connected calendar rather than a separate task list. For email, ask what needs you today and request a draft for the message you choose. Review the draft before allowing it to be sent.
An AI assistant can also make an invoice from a spoken request and save it. Give Orb the details you want on the invoice, then check the result before using it. Saving a document is not processing a payment: Orb does not spend or move money. Research requests can return source links, and notes can preserve decisions for later recall.
A PC assistant, not a fictional Jarvis
If you are searching for a Jarvis AI assistant for PC, separate the idea from the actual jobs you need done. Orb combines conversation with tools for your accounts and files. It is not an all-knowing character or a replacement for your judgment. Calls to your phone or a restaurant and SMS reminders require your own Twilio setup, not just a microphone.
Orb opens October 15 at $349 once. Setup and changes require Claude Code through Claude Pro ($20/month): install Claude, attach the Orb zip in the Code tab and say help me set this up. Orb's reasoning uses your own Anthropic API key, usually about $5–15/month. Your PC must be running, connected services need their permissions, and optional voice services have their own costs.
Questions about Orb
Can I use Orb without speaking?
Yes. You can type requests, mute its spoken responses, or use push-to-talk instead of hands-free listening.
Is Orb a replacement for Siri or Alexa?
It is a different kind of assistant for your own Windows PC, accounts and keys. Choose it for the desktop tasks it supports, not as a promise to replace every smart-speaker or phone feature.
Does Orb work when my PC is off?
No. Orb runs on your computer. Background check-ins need the PC running too, even when the app window is closed.
